The 12th DHC+ Summer School will take place between 25-31 August 2024 in Linz, Austria, and will focus on "Industrial urban symbiosis as an enabler for climate-neutral district heating." Achieving a net-zero energy system needs a widespread transition to renewable sources. District heating (DH) can significantly rely on low-temperature energies like geothermal, solar thermal, waste heat, or ambient heat. Waste heat, currently one of Europe's largest energy resources, poses a key challenge due to its occurrence outside DH network operators' sphere of influence. Overcoming information gaps, fostering trust, and finding suitable business models are crucial steps to utilise waste heat effectively. Implementation success also depends on technical factors such as direct integration, storage and post-heating technologies. Industrial urban symbiosis emerges as an essential concept, facilitating collaborations between industrial companies and DH operators to leverage ecological and economic benefits. This cooperation aims to optimise waste heat utilisation and enhance overall sustainability.
